Syrup Oral Liquid Manufacturing

Dry syrup covers the bulk of our pediatric antibiotic range — cefixime, cefpodoxime, linezolid, and amoxicillin-clavulanate combinations are all manufactured as dry powder and reconstituted at the pharmacy. As a dry syrup manufacturer in India, the formulation work here is mostly about particle size and flow characteristics of the dry blend, since that determines how cleanly it reconstitutes.

Cough and antihistamine syrups — our Dextrom, Maxtrid, and Levot range — are liquid formulations built around expectorant, antitussive, or antihistamine actives, where taste-masking matters more than it does for antibiotic syrups since these are taken repeatedly over several days.

Pediatric syrups span both categories above, but carry additional dosing-accuracy requirements given the narrower therapeutic margins in children. Multivitamin and nutraceutical syrups — Nutrawis, Lycowis, Mega Plus — are liquid, ready-to-use formulations where stability of light- and oxidation-sensitive vitamins is the main manufacturing challenge rather than reconstitution or dosing precision.

These three terms get used loosely, but they describe genuinely different formulations. A syrup is a concentrated sugar-water solution — the active ingredient (if any) is fully dissolved, giving a smooth, viscous liquid that doesn't need shaking before use. An elixir is built on a different base entirely: a hydro-alcoholic solution, typically 10-40% alcohol, which is why the difference between syrup and elixir matters for formulation choice — alcohol dissolves certain actives that water alone can't, and the resulting elixir tends to be thinner and more stable over time than an equivalent syrup, though it isn't suitable for every patient population given the alcohol content.

A suspension is different again: rather than being dissolved, the active ingredient is dispersed as fine undissolved particles throughout the liquid, which is exactly why the difference between syrup and suspension matters at the counter — a suspension separates on standing and has to be shaken before each dose, while a syrup doesn't.

This connects directly to why dry syrup is used instead of liquid for antibiotics specifically: several common antibiotic actives are only stable in an aqueous (water-based) environment for a limited window, sometimes as little as one to two weeks, before hydrolysis degrades potency. Shipping and storing the product dry avoids that degradation entirely — the patient reconstitutes it into a suspension only when the course of treatment actually begins, giving a fresh stability clock that matches the typical treatment duration.
